Where contemporary dance meets Kung Fu & Hip Hop: 2 nights of engaging solos and dynamic duos.
I am wind that is my nature,
I am wind that enters my love,
I am wind that is my mystery,
I am the wind that I am.
The EOLIPILE Dance Company, whose name comes from “Aeolus” - God of the Winds, was founded in 1996 by Taiwanborn, Paris-based dancer and choreographer Lin Yuan Shang who had attended the Beijing Opera School, before expanding his dance knowledge in France with founder of Théâtre du Soleil Ariane Mnouchkine and choreographer Maguy Marin.
In both his solo ‘Kung Fu Dancing’ and duo ‘Kung Fu Commandos’, Lin explores the connection between kung fu energy and contemporary dance; how the two styles feed off of each other and meet to create an energetic fusion that is utterly spectacular.
A charismatic figure in the French hip hop dance scene who previously danced with the Accrorap Company, Brahim Bouchelaghem took part in Le French May 2009 with the hugely successful ‘LittleStories.com’, and returns this year with his own dance company - ZAHRBAT.
In his duo titled ‘El Firak’, Bouchelaghem explores the themes of separation and conflict. His solo piece called ‘What did you say?’ is co-directed with renowned French-based, American dancer and choreographer Carolyn Carlson, who considers Bouchelaghem her protégé. Carlson’s voice is also used throughout the show and her beautiful calligraphy work, which serves as a backdrop of cascading words specifically written for this performance, lends its name to the dance.
