Ma Desheng Solo Exhibition

Celebrated French-Chinese artist Ma Desheng (b. 1952), on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the famed Stars Exhibition of which Wang Keping is also a founder, shows at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery his iconic paintings. One of the most captivating artists from China and leader of the first contemporary art movements in the post-Mao era. This avant-garde movement had a unique status in the development of contemporary Chinese art, it opened a new era and inspired the changes that followed in the next forty years. Ma moved to France in 1986. In this exhibition Ma Desheng exhibits works, both historical and recent, during the French May. The exhibition will be joined with a conference on the Stars Exhibition and the historical events that took place in 1979. Ma Desheng is a published poet and his artworks are collected by the M+ Museum, in Hong Kong and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, The British Museum, London, Museum Cernuschi, Paris, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, l’Association du Museum d’Art Contemporaine de Chamalières, France, Museum of Oxford, London, Museum de Melun, France, Asian Art Museum, Nice, Museum and Art Gallery, the University of Hong Kong.

Born in 1952, French-Chinese artist Ma Desheng is one of the most captivating artists from China and leader of the first contemporary art movements in the post-Mao era. This avant-garde movement had a unique status in the development of contemporary Chinese art, it opened a new era and inspired the changes that followed in the next forty years. Ma Desheng self-trained as a woodblock-craftsman, producing highly expressive prints, his works were loaded with images of man’s struggles for freedom and offered a rare contrast to communist propaganda imagery. His black and white prints from the post-Mao era show the struggles of his generation. Many of his works were used as illustrations for the underground literature and poetry magazine.

Ma moved to France in 1986 and continued his expressive creation in arts and cultural.
